What is it?
The Elgato Stream Deck is a device that gives you control of 15 buttons and upwards – because each button can be used as a folder to 15 other buttons and so on. Kinda like the depths of the universe we love to explore so much.
Now you could of course use a keyboard for that – there are plenty that support multiple switchable sections and macros and all that is great.
But this is where the beauty comes in. The Stream Deck allows graphical icons – and even better, animated ones.
And this is where two of my loves meet. Star Citizen and (Motion)Design.
I present to you the

HERE YOU GO.

What's inside?
What is this about?
I quickly fell in love with my little Command Bridge and saw that other people created all sorts of icons for Star Citizen. I mean, this game kinda needs a plethora of inputs and commands – and that’s only for starting your craft.
After experimenting with the Stream Deck for a bit, I sat down and started animating icons for it for my own personal usage. But as the Star Citizen community – you – is all about sharing and giving, I thought, why not push it a bit further and put some proper work into it, and do a custom set of animated icons for you lot as well as for me?
I decided to put the icons in different groups, but you can put them in your own labels, groups, folders and such – this is just a suggestion, and how I like to play.
After deciding what icon to do that day (it takes approximately 16 hours to make one), I started Star Citizen and looked at my ships.
With manufacturers, I had to understand where they were coming from and what the ships they build stands for.
For the startup sequences, I had to watch them multiple times, of course. As I don’t have access to all ships in the verse (MotionDesign doesn’t pay that well – can you believe that?!?) I had to check YouTube and the playthroughs of you guys. People like MORPHOLOGIS, SUBLIMINAL and KAROLINGER helped a lot – thanks so much, guys!
Then I would do a quick check on starcitizen.tools and download the logo. Open Adobe Illustrator and start editing it. Start hating Illustrator. Question life choices. Realize it’s 5 in the morning. One more coffee. One more anchor point movement. Rinse, repeat…
All logos had to be separated in separate paths to ensure the best editability in Adobe AfterEffects. And then it was all about getting a feel for the icon I was creating, getting behind the lore and animating. After that, figuring out the best codecs that would work best with the Stream Deck.
For the general icons, I based my idea on REPUBLIC TUANIONE‘s great PACK and changed or added what I thought was necessary.
One of the main issues was to make great looking icons, that can be readable in nearly all light situations and not to make them too big file size-wise. The Deck is great and all, but 15x 50MB GIFs are a bit too much for it. The Displays themselves are 72px, but that dimension was a bit too small, so I designed them in 1k and rescaled them in the render process to 256px.
I have to thank https://starcitizen.tools/ for the providing of the icons and descriptions of companies and ships – it helped me understand some aspects better, as I had no time to read up on all the lore.
How was it made?
What's inside?
So, grab the pack at the lower part of the page and let me know what you think is missing or what can be done better.
Also, if you want a specific icon – for your Star Citizen organisation, for example – let me know.
This also goes for logos, openers, Stream Overlays or sometimes websites – or anything that has pixels, really.
Logo for your Org.? Opener vid? Editing your vids?
The Back Button
“Go Back Roger, go back!”
“I can’t find the damn button!”
Folders on the StreamDeck need a back button – so yeah. There’s a back button now. I mean. That’s it.
open Doors
“Hey, I’m at Pad 03, are you there too?”
“No, Hangar 03.”
“Oh, sorry, be there shortly!”
“…”
“Hey, can you like open the door for me?”
We’ve all been there. Now getting up and opening the door manually for the nice fella you will transport from Olisar to Everus Harbor, so he can get his ship back is just too much to ask for those 2k credits, eh?
Open the door from the comfort of your pilot seat with a single button. Lean back, close the door and do your taxi-duty.
lock Doors
How often did you find yourself inspecting one of those really nice wreckage sites, searching for bodies or valuable cargo of the poor souls that didn’t make it, find a crate worth of bringing back – and then finding one of those space motherfuckers IN YOUR OWN SHIP, shooting at you or just stealing it?
Yeah.
Lock. Your. Doors. With this button! New innovative lock-door for everybody outside your party! Those are not friends. You leave my ship alone, space-scum!
Quantum Travel standby
Quantum Travel initiated
Quantum Travel
Quantum Travel initiated.
The first time it blew us away. The fourthousandthtime it still does. Quantum travel is majestic. Why not lean back, let go of your controls after you lined up your craft and with the touch of a button, lean back and enjoy the beauty of long-distance space travel?
The idea was to build an icon that would resemble somehow the Alcubierre-esque way of expanding and contracting time, while giving it a holo-look of course.
It can be used as a hotkey-switch to turn QT on and off again for visual purposes, or just the plain “standby” for a looping button.
Mining
Mining was quite a nice addition to the game loop when it came out. I’d say it’s one of the best lean-back-things and at the same time teeth-grindingly stressful, especially when you haul your space-ass back to the station with a red bleeping quantanium cargo.
Quick to find with the well-known orange color. Some indicators that will stress everybody out and you got your mining icon. Of course with the beloved Helix-/Hofstede laser. (whichever you prefer – or the next update nerfs)
Lights
Well… Lights.
One for vehicles, one for ships.
I provided the on/off icons too, without animation because some folks like to have it as a toggle. Your call.
Docking
Hopefully going better than that goddamn USB-Port that ALWAYS seems to need three tries. Why is that? Srsly?
Had many iterations on that one, going from Angler-Fish to a Silhouette of the Connie and the Merlin, but then decided to stay minimalistic.
Landing gear
“Oh – I forgot that there is landing gear”
Something we should have learned from countless of hours of flight simulators, in Freelancer or now in Star Citizen, we sometimes still forget – so here have a nice button to remind you to deploy landing gear before you get too excited about all the money you’re gonna make with that one narc package you just tried to deliver.
Systems power managment
She waited in the shade the asteroid provided. With a nervous glance, she checked the systems – thrusters were off, shields were off, weapons off. She even unconsciously made her own profile smaller by slouching a little in the pilot’s seat, athough she felt stupid when she caught herself. She needed to keep her head down, literally. A job like hers, with a ship like hers, needed the delicacy of surprise, and she knew they were scanning the area, looking for something out of the ordinary. Even a small signature like her ship had could jeopardise the mission. Then she saw a glint on the horizon. That must be them. Her fingers hovered over the system’s power management buttons. Just a bit closer. Just a bit longer. Yeah. Come on. Come closer. … NOW! with a quick press, she started all systems, and the ship came to life. Before her signature was readable, she released a hailstorm of bullets and laser salves upon them. That moment of inattention sealed their fate.
The distinction between ON and OFF had to be made immediately even when not really looking, as we all know, in the heat of battle our surroundings can get obscured. So it was necessary to also make a clear visual distinction between systems that were active or need to be shut down.
(de)couple
If you are a HOTAS user, you normally don’t ever fly with it on, but those without sometimes need that extra pinch of maneuverability. Get close to the ground in your hawk-esque bird of prey approach, then throw the switch and afterburners on – and you either look damn nice on that YouTube promo your org leader thought was a great idea, or you end up as a very sad for you, but very funny to everybody else anecdote at the next Bar Citizen meet-up. Your call.
The idea here was very clearly taken from Republic Tuanione, as I think his icon was quite clearly readable. I tried a gear, or two grinding gears, but all didn’t really feel like they would fit, so we got back to the classic car-coupling.
Decouple is provided as either a hotkey switch, or a “normal” button – each to their own.
launch countermeasures
Put close to power management, so you can drop some chaff while getting your ass and cargo out of the zone, quick.
Or under targeting – you can do as you like.
Launching countermeasures and cycling through them is kinda a big deal. I for my part always hit the wrong button – which cost me valuable seconds and most times my virtual life. So it was clear for me to provide icons which let you distinguish quickly.
Eject
When your spacecraft draws it’s last breath, it is time to leave it behind. As much as it hurts you, but that beeing “systems critical” is a good indicator to leave this relationship.
Put under the LastResort-Folder, eject and suicide should be double-checked, so make sure you are sure.
Suicide
When you misspell “useless” on your suicide note, you should use that button. Or when the bugs win.
In all seriousness though, I made multiple versions of this.
As I know it is a subject that can be triggering and uncomfortable and I really don’t want people to feel bad. At all.
So choose the one you like or are okay with.
Cooler increase / Decrease
Much like your graphics card and all the other parts of your computer cry out in the voices of a thousand tortured souls when you start starcitizen.exe, so do the cooling systems in your newly-acquired ship. If you stay with the default, that is. So say goodbye to your overheating weapons with some buttons for increasing the cooling rate. Those shields on your Cutty are just for decoration anyway.
This was quite straightforward. It’s a cooler, what do you want? Although getting the loop right was kinda rough. But so was getting my ship of Port Olisar the first time I started the Aurora, so you know. Life’s a bitch and then you die, get some cool shit in between….
I’ll see myself out.
They come in two variants, loopable and non-loopable. My favorite are the non-loopers, I love how the fan starts. But that’s just me.
Shields
Every Bucaneer pilot knows that shield management is an absolute necessity to survive. Then again, it’s a Drake Interplanetary ship, so the shields are shit anyway. Okay, let’s try again. Ever Connie-Owner knows that…. okay… No.
Anyway.
Shields are essential for survival under fire. So having them available fast and pushing capacities to the shields that need it most (front or back mostly) is really important. After you survived the fight, you can lean back and reset them, and wait for them to reset. If they do.
The shown animation here is all shields together with the reset icon in the middle. Arrows show the orientation. Duh.
Prioritization
As in life, SC is about priorities. I mean, in life SC is priority, but inside of SC priorities are … priorities?
You get my drift. Sometimes you need to put all available resources towards those shields, or thrusters, and sometimes your weapons need that last spark to get rid of that enemy. Prioritize!
Keeping the design very close to the ON/of switches, I added a yellow arrow and a slightly different background to the prioritization buttons to differentiate them. The icons stayed the same for clearer readability.
Radar
For those of us who love using radar to find those pesky bad guys.
Not much of a radar user myself. I shoot when I see the white of their eyes. Different strokes.
Lock/Unlock Target
I mean… kinda self explanatory, no?
Clear, mostly subtle, just a quick rectangle, no need to overload the targeting screen.
Match Velocity
Sometimes you want to stay far enough away, but be close enough to hit them when they don’t expect it. Match their velocity and stalk them proper.
I chose the trusty Cutlass for the target – as you know – it was the “bad-guy-ship” not too long ago. Just seemed fitting.
Comes in two versions, as the one on the left is HQ and needs a higher file save, there is a LQ-version.
Lock Index - Lock / Unlock Pinned Target
Lock next target to get them into your reticle. For shooting stuff you know.
(Shoutout to Matthew Hjellen and his awesome StarKitty-Helmet)
Pin Index - Pin / Unpin Selected Target
Pin next target. I wanted to make those more generic, and not just enemies, so I kinda used well used ships. Pictures could be changed of course if you lot find a different ship would work better.
I needed to make pinning very different from locking, while keeping it “the same” or in the same ballpark. So the general UI was used and then the pin was made a bit “friendlier” so to speak. Blue, as in something between friend or foe. As you can pin everything. (I know you can lock friendlies too, but seems like a “bad thing to do”, as it is considered a crime stat.

And those who wish me harm, shall perish before me…
Made a map to get really into it. Might change it though, not yet completely happy with it. Let’s wait for feedback and see then.
Change Missile type
Switch, Lock’n’Load
For this it was needed to get a quick reminder of what missile types you have, so it switches through the available types – with resemblance to the icons shown in your HUD.
Cycle Lock - In View Under Reticle (T)
when you want to exactly get THAT ONE.
For this it was needed to get a quick reminder of what missile types you have, so it switches through the available types – with accordance to the icons shown in your HUD.
Decoy Launch Burst (H)
Worked for thousands of years, why not now. Shoot that little decoy flare big boy, I’m coming around…
As “change countermeasure” changed, a new icon had to be made.
Noise Deploy (J)
Go get some Scifi-Metallica.
As “change countermeasure” changed, a new icon had to be made.
Second one for the “lulz”.
We all love our spacecrafts. We either worked hard for them or paid for them – which is also hard work, earning our credits. Every time we spawn them – sorry, claim them – we feel that awe and sensation when running up to it, mumbling “damn you’re a good lookin’ gal/guy”.
So I wanted to give every ship a unique twist – and what better way than the startup sequences – or in this case – startup buttons.
Esperia
Esperia Incorporation is a Human spacecraft manufacturer that adapts, reproduces, and sells existing xeno spacecraft and weapon designs. The company was founded in 2873 by Jovi and Theo Ingstrom, brothers interested in preserving spacecraft-building history. Apart from manufacturing alien vessels, the company also funds several xenoarchaeology research grants through the University of Rhetor. The current CEO of Esperia is Charlotte Hussion.[1] The company is headquartered in Kutaram, Terra, Terra. The United Empire of Earth Navy (UEEN) makes use of Esperia’s replica spacecraft for testing and for aggressor training their combat pilots.[2]

Prowler / Talon / Shrike
The idea with Esperia Incorporated was to build the animation around their lion symbol.
As Esperia is an alien ship manufacturer, you pay tax for cool – so it needed to be exactly that. I needed to adapt the startup sequence to this.
The switch to power up goes from the iconic lion to visually supporting the alien-sounding “systems initializing”-voice-over.
All in their iconic red, of course.
When powering up, the opening sequence from the Prowler – and now also from the Talon (Shrike) – gets you in the right mood for flying these glorious-looking ships.
Drake Interplanetary
Drake Interplanetary is a Human spacecraft manufacturer that designs, manufacturers and sells spaceships in the Star Citizen universe. It is headquartered in Odyssa, Borea, Magnus. It is fifth largest spacecraft producer in human space. Drake was founded in 2845 by Jan Dredge to produce the Cutlass medium fighter for militia use. Drake has cultivated its image since then to appeal to those seeking less conventional designs.[1] Their ships have a characteristically robust and geometrical design that utilizes many low-tech materials. Drake’s target group also includes militias and pirates. The formers CEOs Jan and Jon Dredge cultivated the outlaw image from the beginning of the company, which raised controversies about Drake’s responsibility for pirate-related crimes.[2][3]

Drake Cutlass
I am a lover of Drake Interplanetary. Sorry. Especially my Cutlass.
The main focus here is the iconic yellow/white/black color scheme and the unique “Hello and welcome to your Drake Interplanetary craft”-voice-over of my beloved Cutlass.
As the Cutlass has its great back turbines, I wanted something explosive when you hit that button, so yeah. It’s – well – an explosion.
GLADIUS
It’s well known that the Gladius gets the most love of the Aegis ships. Since it has its very own start up sound, I had to implement the iconic Gladius silhouette into the startup sequence.
Vanguard
Made the four Bulldogs in one run. I tried to incorporate the Names – and as they are all kinda Guardians a shield seemed to be the symbol of choice there.
Anvil Aerospace
Anvil Aerospace is a Terra-based spaceship manufacturing company. Providing ships for the military and regular citizens, Anvil Aerospace has made some of the best dogfighting ships in the Star Citizen universe.

So the approach here was to make it slick and clean, with some hard edges and a lot of lights and fancyness. Kinda like a 315. That’s one sexy ship.

Spotify
What’s better than flying over the barren landscape of Yela and listening to the mesmerizing beat of Vogel’s Night City, or getting into a fight with Varian’s Blood Hunter in your ear?
Playlists make the game even better, the Stream Deck has been added one of the greatest functions, which is Spotify control. The necessary plugin can be found at the Elgato shop or directly at the maker BarRaider.
The biggest hurdle here was to figure out how to animate the Spotify logo itself, I tried liquid animation, stop motion, pixelized, nothing really seemed to work. But in the end it was really just the obvious ones that worked well.
